Das erste Mal stieß ich auf Mbela Nzuzi in einer Netz-Recherche. Unter der NGO ARCA* gab es Informationen über die 1999 gegründete afrikanische Band GLORIA bei der sie als Leadsängerin fungiert. Im Weiteren fand ich heraus, dass sie zudem Präsidentin der selbst organisierten NGO »Refugee Woman’s Organization« (RWO) sowie Moderatorin beim Fernsehkanal B1 TV ist. Letztere Tätigkeit brachte ihr in Rumänien einen ziemlich hohen Bekanntheitsgrad. Es gibt unzählige Artikel in Tageszeitungen, Frauenzeitschriften als auch Webfeatures, die um ihre Person kreisen, wo sie u. a. als moderne Erfolgsfrau, »exotische Erscheinung«, Sarmale Köchin**, oder als Flüchtlings-Leader, die für ihren Einsatz für die Rechte von Flüchtlingsfrauen in Rumänien von der UNHCR*** ausgezeichnet wurde usf., beschrieben wird.
Ich begann die vielfältigen medial kursierenden Zuschreibungen zu sammeln und in eine Serie von Zeichnungen zu verarbeiten. Im Projekt »In winter it’s cold outside« werden diese Projektionen dem Engagement und der Vorbildfunktion von Mbela Nzuzi in der sie umgebenden Flüchtlings-Community gegenüber gestellt. Die Videofeatures lassen auch ihre KollegInnen bei der RWO zu Wort kommen und zeigen die unterschiedlichsten politischen und kreativen Strategien die sie anwenden um auf die Probleme von MigrantInnen in Rumänien aufmerksam zu machen und herrschende Stereotypen abzubauen. The first time I came across Mbela Nzuzi was while doing research on the Internet. The NGO ARCA 1 had information about the African band Gloria, started in 1999, for which she is the lead singer. Furthermore, I found out that she is president of the self-organized NGO Refugee Woman’s Organization (RWO) and a moderator for the television channel B1 TV. The latter activity made her quite famous in Romania. There are countless articles in newspapers and women’s magazines as well as web features about her that describe her as a modern and successful woman, an “exotic appearance,” a sarmale cook**, or a refugee leader, who has been awarded by the UNHCR*** for her efforts for refugee women in Romania.
I began to collect the multitude of write-ups circulating the media and used them in a series of drawings. In the project In Winter It’s Cold Outside, these projections are contrasted with Mbela Nzuzi’s commitment and function as a role model in the refugee community. The videos feature comments by her colleagues at RWO and depict the most diverse political and creative strategies used to draw attention to the problems of migrants in Romania and to dispel prevailing stereotypes.
